1. Weed lines: What Are You Accumulating?

Off the east coast of the U.S., there is a warm current of water called the Gulf Stream that flows from the tip of Florida up to the Saint Lawrence Seaway and crossing over to the United Kingdom. With its beautiful blue and 80 degree warmth, it can run as close as 40 miles to the coast and other days, shift to 60 miles offshore. Arriving there to fish for a day is like seeing an old, welcome friend.

Often en route to or in the Gulf Stream, there are golden lines floating on the ocean waves--a weed line. They begin forming when a piece of Sargasso weed catches on a wave, and another piece of weed catches on the first, and so on, accumulating. Some extend a couple of miles and others are only a few hundred yards long. These weed lines offer a buffet to tiny sea creatures who in turn become buffets for even larger fish. Fishermen troll beside them for larger fish: mahi mahi or billfish. A whole chain of events occurs all starting with that first piece of weed and an ocean wave.

Our thoughts are similar. A thought, like a piece of Sargasso weed, catches on the wave of some experience, and then another thought catches upon that one. Soon our thoughts create our own weed line in the form of a belief. Over time, the belief no longer floats on the surface but starts to operate just below it automatically. It determines what opportunities we see or don't, what actions we take or don't. Unlike the ocean weed line however, our beliefs may not attract the kind of fish we want to catch. Your future results are created right now based on your thoughts and beliefs whether you are aware of them or not.

2. Practice

Is there a situation that has been going on awhile that is causing you some pain? Choose one where you would really like things to change. What belief if you had it, would have the greatest positive impact on that situation? Write it down. We'll call this your desired belief.

Once or twice a day throughout your work week, check in and think about the situation. (Your Personal Digital Assistant, the reminder feature in your automated calendar, or your planner are good tools to remind you.) When you check in ask yourself "Am I operating from my desired belief?" or "Have I operated from my desired belief today?" If the answer is no, then ask yourself the second part: "If I were operating from that belief, what actions would I take?"

This practice should take you no more than 1 to 2 minutes each check-in.Do it for 2 to 3 weeks. Because the check-ins occur duringyour work day and over a period of time, you will have insight into previously hidden beliefs that are shaping your choices and actions. You will be consciously choosing the more productive belief and taking actions based upon it. Most importantly, you will start to see the results.

May you create weed lines bountiful with your desired fish.
