1. Morning
Glories: Coaching is Like That
It's
summer in the U.S., the east coast air saturated with humidity.
The tendrils of the morning glories are climbing, spiraling upward.
Morning glories do that you know. They climb and they climb, often
15 feet or more in a single season and bloom profusely: velvety
deep purple flowers, or large sky blue ones, white or deep red flowers
depending on the variety. Sometimes a rising tendril starts to curl
around itself, growing just as vigorously but no longer upward.
It wraps more and more tightly turning into a tangled jumble. No
blooms can happen here. If you are respectful of it--working with
its strength and tenderness--you can unwrap the tendril and help
it find its natural path upward.
When people
ask me about leadership coaching I can tell them it's a collaborative
partnership between a coach and an executive or high potential and
his organization for the purposes of achieving business results.
Or one between the coach and executive to achieve career transition
results. I can tell them they'll achieve their goals more quickly,
with greater satisfaction and a positive impact on the bottom line.
All true. But that description misses the essence of the coaching
relationship and my belief that people inherently move and want
to move toward fulfilling their greatest potential. Sometimes an
intervention is needed by someone who isn't climbing the very same
climb who can point him or her to a different or better route .
And as easily and
naturally as the morning glory, he or she is on her way.
I hope your
path is upward and onward!
