1. Simple
Magic: Being Seen
For several
summers, I have been a buddy at a camp for grieving children--those
who have lost loved ones. It may sound like a difficult thing to
do. It can be. But children's ability to engage in play interspersed
with grief beautifully illustrates human resilience and the whole
we call our lives.
One of the events
during the weekend involves a musician named Stream. He's a Scandinavian
with music resonating in his eyes and a warm, engaging presence.
In addition to the delight of his music I witnessed something so
powerful I fully understood what coaching does for my clients. While
Stream sings, he makes full eye contact with each child (and each
of us adult children)--punctuating his song with a pointed finger
and the word "you." I watched each child's face light
up with the acknowledgement--with having been seen. I, too, lit
up when he pointed directly to me. All that training, all those
theories on how to help leaders be their most effective selves,
and here was that simple magic in a musician's interaction with
children: we want to be seen.
When I work
with clients that is what I do. I see them at their best, the essence
of what is most powerful about them. I hold that vision while they
step into it and learn to take action from that place. When they
limit themselves through behaviors or thought, I support and challenge
them to stand in a different place. Amazing things happen there.
Is this unique
to me and my coaching? Of course not. I personally am "seen"
by my many: mentors, friends, associates, and my parents (who are
in their 80s and still affirm me in every conversation). While I
view myself as accomplished, with a passion for business leadership,
they see me as bigger, even more vibrant, even more extraordinary
than I perceive myself. And that is what I become.
How about you?
Who is "seeing" you--the fullest expression of yourself
as a leader? Whom are you "seeing?" If you think you don't
have people in your life who give you this gift, first check again.
Surely they are there and in numbers greater than you may at first
suspect. Notice the gift they offer and fully receive it. (Sometimes
that can take practice.)
In turn, offer
this gift to others. The quality of your life as a
leader
will deepen and expand. The results you want will follow naturally.
