Floating Party: Making Time to Fall in Love
The rain from
hurricane Katrina that canceled Saturday night's party was nowhere
in sight Sunday, our "rain date." I walked across lush
grass to the wooden boat--really a large raft with a motor--set
with tables and chairs arranged to encourage intimate tête-à-têtes.
This would be our departure point. Old and new friends all on board,
we began a blissful glide out into the lake.
In the center
of the lake maybe 10 boats rafted together, linked to each other
by their dock lines, like small islands, their shores barely touching,
gently adrift in the silky water. On one, a band played. Another
served as a dance floor. A third held a smoking grill.
On our boat,
we chose to drift mostly. A lovely selection of food lay on our
table and groups of twos and threes were engaging in conversation--the
accelerating speed of technology, raw-food diets, matrixed organizations,
swing dancing, satellite reconnaissance, relationships--all of it
softened by the gentle lap of the water and the glow of candlelight
flickering in the perfect breeze.
Other boats
silently motored past us. They all looked like scenes from a theater
stage--clusters of people sitting or standing, floating on black,
quiet water, backlit by the falling dusk or their shadowed faces
illuminated by small Tiki torches and lanterns.
A flock of geese was coming in to land and we all stopped talking,
listening instead to the whoosh of their beating wings.
It's not hard
to fall in love with yourself and your life when it is like this.
Your heart is full and you feel love even for someone who, just
a few hours ago, was a stranger.
Indeed,
these kinds of experiences soften my heart and carry me through
the times when it isn't easy to be in love with myself, my life,
or with running a business. How about you? Are you making time
to fall in love with yourself and your life? I hope so.
Wishing You
a Full Heart,
Beth Hand
