1. Star Performers: Arrogance or a Greater Beauty

When the flowers arrived, they were exquisite in their individual beauty--a glass vase filled with single stems. Overnight, the pale yellow roses and soft white peonies transformed themselves unfolding, filling out--absolutely breathtaking. They were not the same arrogant flowers that had arrived the day before.

If we are a star performer, we can be like that. We're a little too wrapped up in ourselves to make a whole. There's an unspoken declaration: "Look at me!" and "I know best!" We stand proud, resolute. But singly. In our minds, we win or we lose depending on whether others'--my peers, other divisions, my bosses--buy into my solution. There's frustration even demoralization if they don't. Meanwhile, we use this as evidence to reinforce our obvious brilliance and their inability to see.

I knew this stance too well. As I matured, I began to experience the power of the bigger arrangement: my team and those influencing us. And that is exactly when my ability to lead started to flourish. I shifted from the arrogance of driving forward with what I assumed best to influencing and eliciting our best from my team and our stakeholders.

Are you a star performer standing exquisite but singly? What would happen if for a week or a month you practiced saying "We know best." "We know best, and I'm a part of that."

Here's to Your Greater Beauty and Power,
