1. L'Essential: Seen Only with the Heart

Je ne puis pas jouer avec toi, dit le renard. Je ne suis pas apprivoisé. "I can't play with you," said the fox. "I'm not tamed."

The fox is speaking to the Little Prince, a golden-haired child visiting from a far-away asteroid. He explains that taming means creating ties. "You're just one little boy among 1,000 little boys. I don't need you and you don't need me either. But if you tame me, we will need each other. You will be unique in all the world to me. I will be unique in all the world to you."

"Wheat is useless to me but when you've tamed me, I will love wheat because its color is the color of your hair. It will remind me of you." He tells him how, ever so slowly, the Little Prince may tame him. S'il te plait… Apprivoisé-moi! dit'il. "Please… tame me!" he said. And so goes chapter 21, my favorite, in The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

Later, when the Little Prince comes to say good-bye to the fox, the fox begins to cry. "You're crying and sad. You've gained nothing" says the Little Prince. "I've gained because of the color of wheat" said the fox. He then reveals a simple secret. "One cannot see except with the heart. The essential is invisible to the eye." The fox tells the Little Prince that it is the time he spends caring that makes someone so important--unique in all the world.

As leaders of our lives and businesses, we must not forget that a part of us wants to be tamed--to create ties and to be seen as special to others. To care and be cared for. Some of us stay masked--people know of us but they don't know our hearts. It's such a loss for everyone! Some of us extend that invitation more easily: we show our heart and our mind, our strengths and our vulnerabilities. It takes courage to do this. And trust. Trust in the care and intentions of those around us. Trust in ourselves and our own worth, our own lovability even when we perceive ourselves as imperfect or less than competent.

What about you? Are you extending an invitation to be tamed? To create ties where you become unique in all the world to someone, to your team or the employees in your company? Don't deny yourself or us the richness of all that is you. Yes, it's true… some will see you only with their eyes. That's what they know and they haven't learned differently. But there are many of us who will see you--l'essential--the unique and important--with our hearts. In turn, you will become even more unique to us, and we to you.

To l'essential,

Beth Hand
