1. The Popeye
Defense: I Yam What I Yam
Here
we are--a manager tapped by the organization as part of the future
senior leadership, and I--engaged in a coaching conversation. I'm
challenging the manager to try a new perspective and behavior that
he agrees would be beneficial. Suddenly, there it is
"But
that's not me," he might say, or "I can't" or "If
I do that, then people will think I'm too soft" or "too
this or that."
I have run smack
into what I call The Popeye Defense. Remember the old cartoon
about the spinach-swilling sailor? He loudly proclaimed, "I
yam what I yam" followed by throaty, self-delighted
laughter: "Ug, ug, ug."
What I also
hear is the silent statement, "I don't know how to do it differently.
And do it consistent with a value that's important to me."
The Popeye Defense.
Where do you use it? Can you hear what's not said?
