1. A 'Wahoo'
Moment

One day, after
fishing off-shore for marlin, we'd caught a 70-pound Wahoo on the
way back in. It's a fast fish, with tiger-like stripes, that can
swim up to 47 mph. Bringing it on board was as spectacular and shocking
as an excerpt from a Hunter S. Thompson book. The finale left a
dead fish, a mate with a leg wounded by the Wahoo's formidable teeth,
and a messy, blood-spattered white deck. My brother Bill and I shook
our heads at the drama we'd just experienced.
On another trip,
Ben, a family friend was on board. We hooked a Mahi-mahi and reeled
it in. In one fluid motion Ben gaffed the Mahi-mahi, swinging it
over the transom right into the fish box. A mate deftly placed the
top on, leaving just enough room for Ben to extricate the gaff with
an easy turn of his wrist. The top closed and it was done.
My brother Bill
and I were silent. We were having what I now call a "Wahoo
moment." Our past efforts to land fish fell behind like the
wake of a boat, replaced by this model of grace and skillful economy
of effort. We would never, ever gaff and boat a fish the same way
we had. And we never did.
I like these
"Wahoo moments." When you not only see a whole new way,
you have a whole new way in just an instant. One that delights and
satisfies completely.
I've had several
this week. With a team. With colleagues. With my own business processes,
even. But without the drama of a flailing fish and Wahoo teeth,
they almost slipped by unnoticed.
Once I start
noticing, their frequency increases and so does my satisfaction
with life. So, let me make an inquiry and offer a gift
Where in the
past weeks have you had your Wahoo moments?
Here's to Catching
Them...
