1. Transformation
Begins with Orange
I was at Calypso,
a dream vacation house beachside in the Bahamian Abaco Islands off
the east coast of the U.S. Each room is spacious, light and airy
with blond wood walls and tall windows trimmed in white with white,
large-slatted blinds. There are exquisite views of the ocean or palms
from all the windows and doors in the house. Tropical colors throughout
accent the neutral palette. In my bedroom? An orange quilted bedspread
lined with the color of red hibiscus and bordered with a sophisticated
Indian print. I fell in love.
A month later,
after I returned home, I talked myself into locating and ordering
the beloved bedspread in aqua. After all, aqua was the better aesthetic
fit for my room.
I felt entirely
cheated when it arrived.
Yet I was reluctant
to send this very expensive thing back just because I felt bothered
by a very nice, perfectly appropriate color. I was willing to try
to live with it. It kept bothering me in a subtle, persistent way.
Finally I asked Sage--director of an electronics association and
a talented artist--her opinion. "Absolutely it can go in here
I
love orange!"
It was only
then that I laughed at the obvious. Some wiser part of me knew to
choose her. Knew she would sanction what my logic was arguing against.
She has an orange jeep which I see regularly, and she painted her
kitchen walls burnt orange, which I often see when I walk the dog
past her home. Sage made the simplest suggestion for changing the
color of the drapes so that the soon-to-arrive orange bedspread
would fit in beautifully. I was so happy to say "Yes!"
to exactly what I wanted rather to "just live with" the
aqua spread.
Every week I
work with leaders who choose not to settle. We work together to
change their habits of thought and action, and indeed, their way
of being. What comes as a surprise to many is where they have settled
without evening knowing it.
Settling
closes down possibilities--possibilities for greater inspired action
and for deep satisfaction. In the super fast pace of organizational
life, it's not always easy to attend to subtleties--so begin wherever
you are. Even with a bedspread.
If I told these
leaders that transformation starts with orange they wouldn't get
it because they don't know the story. But you do
So what happens
when you, without pushing or drama, decide not to settle?
Here's to saying
"Yes!" to Exactly What You Want...
