1. Your Inner
Bulldog
Are you someone
who sees many sides to a situations rather than reacting to a narrow
slice of data? Companies and teams need you! Yet, what if you are
someone who loses sight of your own side in that very situation?
I was coaching
a client with just such an ability. Her strength--considering the
perspectives of key stakeholders when crafting a next step or a
solution--had become unproductive. How? She let others' needs come
before her own and in a way that negatively impacted her ability
to fulfill her roles and responsibilities. Ironically, not giving
her own needs more consideration was detrimental to the very stakeholders
she was trying serve.
I asked her
to call on her inner bulldog.
English Bulldogs
are entirely lovable animals. They are also known for their stubbornness
and their ability to guard. And that is exactly what this client
needed--to be a little more stubborn on her own behalf and on guard
for a strength gone awry. I applauded to find her inner bulldog
was alive and well, just napping. She recognized the imbalance,
her over-consideration of others, and the negative impact to both
herself and those around her. When she gave more weight to her own
need, crafting the next action step became much easier, the solution
much clearer. As you might suspect, she better served the stakeholders,
too.
So, if you are
like my client, remember to call on your inner bulldog and ask him
to be vigilant! Once you've identified what he needs to be on the
alert for--trust him--he'll let you know.
