1. Energy
Management ROI Trumps Time Management: The Corporate Athlete
Do the following
statements sound familiar?
- "I usually
don't take lunch."
- "Between
work and family, exercise just falls by the wayside."
- "I
can't get enough sleep--early morning or late night is the only
quiet time I have."
Let's try this
on for a moment: What if you declared yourself an athlete--a corporate
athlete? How would things be different?
You would know
the importance of taking care of all aspects of yourself in the
same way an elite athlete does-physically, mentally, emotionally-to
ensure world class performance. You would realize that the return
on investment (ROI) for energy management is superior to the ROI
for time management.
This is the
lens through which Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz ask us to look in
their book The Power of Full Engagement:
Managing Energy, Not Time, Is the Key to High Performance and Personal
Renewal . Loehr and Schwartz emphasize four premises:
- There are
four types of energy: spiritual, mental, physical, and emotional.
- Energy expenditure
and renewal is essential at all levels.
- You can,
and should, increase your capacity the same way elite athletes
do.
- You can,
and should, use tailored, specific rituals to sustain and renew
energy.
If you accept
these premises, then fully embracing the concept of being a corporate
athlete, and therefore making time to take care of yourself, is
no longer negotiable. Instead, it is integral to your commitment
to exceptional performance. The results? Satisfyingly self-evident.
Lunch, anyone?
