1. Why Having
Fun is Dangerous
Are you someone
who lives pretty conservatively? For example, someone whose expenditures
of time and money must be pragmatic, practical, prudent?
Might you also
be someone who wants a bigger salary, to attract more clients or
increase profits for your company? I can tell you how to get that.
It's very simple. You probably will secretly like it on one level
but resist fully embracing it on another.
Here's the answer:
Have more fun.
In one study,
for example, Sears showed that every five percent in "employee
motivation" equated to increasing profits by half a percentage
point. And the American Psychological Association published several
surveys showing that productivity and profits are higher in companies
where employees have fun.
Did I start
having more fun willingly? No. But I had a secret weapon--Cecelia,
who is a senior vice-president in global consulting company. Cecelia
delivered her practical wisdom deftly between my eyes: "You
know how to work hard, now learn how to have fun."
Since then,
I've discovered that
- "Vacation
is my friend," yet another pearl of wisdom Cecelia imparted;
- " I
relish high-end restaurants as much as my beloved local dives;
" I thrive on bright, bold colors such as golden Fritatta,
cobalt blue, and seafoam in my home; and
- " I
enjoy wearing (gasp!) totally impractical high-heeled shoes.
Okay, so some
of these are "girlie-type things," but you get the idea.
Indulgence is fun! And counter-intuitive as it may seem, imminently
pragmatic, practical, and prudent.
Indulging in
fun gives you breaks from the stress of working too long and too
hard. Stress has been shown to shrink brain structures and slow
brain cell growth. Having a good time does just the opposite--it
can strengthen different centers in the brain and help it grow healthy
brain cells.
The bottom-line
about having more fun? That's easy--all I have to do is look to
my business' bottom-line. In the past several years, my company's
profits have soared.
So let me warn
you
having fun is dangerous. It will turn what you think you
know on its head--and you just might like the new view.
