Right-Sized Emotions
My life flashed
before my eyes. That is, my life without my dog flashed before my
eyes. It's to be expected
Druid, my handsome black dog with
the flowing fur, came into my home almost 14 years ago. He hasn't
been well and seems to be recovering. Only time will tell.
There were intermittent
minutes, hours, where my emotions clearly weren't right-sized--dog-sized
in this case. Any unfinished business, regrets, or fears came to
the fore: children not had; my parents in their mid- and late eighties;
a desire for my work to be in international development where I'm
no expert, etc
I made a pie
chart for my worries, something I've walked a client or two through
before. I drew a large circle,
then assigned slices to each thing worrying me--the size of the
slice scaled to the size of the worry. When I managed to separate
what was about Druid and what wasn't, my emotions while still big,
came more into line.
Along with that
alignment came equanimity. A fullness as our shared past and the
unknown future caused "right now" to bloom.
It reminds me
of an exquisite winter morning after a deep snow has fallen in the
night. Sound is muted and there is a hush before the world wakes
up, before children come out to play and schuss down the hill nearby
on their sleds, or before shovels begin to scrape neighbors' walks.
There is a quiet, full intimacy with the morning. You relinquish
everything you might have planned. The present becomes replete with
right now.
So next time
there is an event where the resulting emotions threaten to sweep
you precariously off-balance, check them for their fit--make sure
they are right-sized whether that be "client-sized," "team-sized,"
or even "dog-sized."
Here's to finding
that good fit.
