An Environmental Hazard Dangerous to Your Career
We'd
had a lovely meeting--a senior executive, me, and a high potential
hungry for fulfilling work.
When the high
potential left, the senior exec said, "She's a firecracker!
She doesn't grasp her value in the marketplace and how powerful
her position for negotiating exactly what she wants." It was
true. She didn't.
She was experiencing
an environmental hazard dangerous to her career--work that no longer
enlivened her. Instead, it was depleting her sense of professional
vitality and worth.
What to do?
Assuming all else is in good order--your health, your personal life,
etc
, the quickest remedy is to get out and about in the marketplace
with interesting people. Coffee, lunch, association meetings, golf,
etc. Notice what engages you, where you are naturally drawn.
You may already
be doing this. But are you doing it with your future in mind?
With regular
forays into the marketplace scoping out what everyone else is doing,
you will have a dawning realization or a light-bulb moment--either
source of illumination is fine--about where your unique interests,
talents, and perspective can bring a solution to a company's or
boss's needs. (A collateral and not insignificant benefit is that
you will find your immediate work more enjoyable, or at a minimum,
more tolerable.)
Without even
having changed jobs yet, you are taking definitive steps to reducing
toxins and creating a healthier career environment that leads to
a healthy job environment. Now, those are pretty good returns on
your "getting out there with your future in mind" investment!
