Periodically We Will Feature Leaders Who Demonstrate These and More...

Dr. Muhammed Yunus

Dr. Muhammed Yunus is a visionary with a dream to eradicate poverty. In the 1970s, he questioned the economics he was teaching after interviewing a woman making bamboo stools. She was repaying middlemen for raw bamboo at a rate of 10% a day, more than 3,000% a year, leaving her a penny in profit and no ability to rise above subsistence level.

Recognizing the need of this woman and other poorest of the poor to have access to credit and favorable rates, Dr. Yunus founded the Grameen Bank www.grameen-info.org meaning 'village bank' to provide just that. As a pioneer in micro-lending where loan amounts are usually under $100, the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh now has over 1,000 branches, with 12,000 staff serving over 2 million borrowers. Almost 95% of the borrowers are women, and 98% of the loans are paid back--a superior recovery rate for any bank. Grameen principles have been and are being successfully applied to projects in over 100 countries including the U.S., Canada, France and The Netherlands.

Elizabeth Dole

Elizabeth Dole has modeled the way in her role as National Director of Education and Information, National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. On December 3, 2001, she launched a high profile campaign to inform Americans about the benefits of hospice. Speaking to hospice program representatives from across the country, Dole highlighted hospice's importance within America's healthcare system and hospice's benefits to patients and families.

Dole's broad-based, multimedia National Hospice Education and Information Campaign is planned to include hospice volunteer service, television and radio public service announcements, public appearances, and publications. The occasion kicked off NHPCO's celebration of the Medicare Hospice Benefit's 20th anniversary by recognizing the Honorable Robert J. Dole, longtime hospice champion.

What is NHPCO? The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization www.nhpco.org is the largest nonprofit membership organization and leading resource for hospice and palliative care programs and professionals in the United States. NHPCO provides educational programs and technical assistance, and works to influence health programs and public policies to profoundly enhance the quality of life for the dying and their loved ones.

What People Say...

"It takes more than subject matter expertise… The formula needs to include cultural adaptability, people skills, and considerable patience. Beth exhibited all of these qualities. She has an eagerness to learn about people and languages… a sincere interest to understand the organizational and ethnic cultures… In preparing for this tour she did her homework on the Turkish Republic, its culture, politics and Islamic religion…"

You are a fierce champion for the people whose lives you touch, never permitting them to listen to the inner critic, and always pointing out their gifts and strengths.

You have the personal qualities of a true leader. Added to those are your global perspective and strong desire to bring people together for everyone's benefit. It's a combination that makes you capable of significant contributions to any environment in which you find yourself."
